Windhoek Kicks Off Fire Safety Week with Citywide Awareness Campaign. The City of Windhoek Fire Brigade officially launched Fire Safety Week 2025 today with a vibrant procession through the city, followed by an opening ceremony at the Fire Brigade Headquarters. The initiative, observed globally from 5 to 10 October, aims to raise public awareness about fire prevention and promote safety practices across communities.

During the launch, Mayor Cllr Ndeshihafela Larandja highlighted the ongoing risks fires pose to lives and livelihoods, particularly in informal settlements where high population density and limited access to emergency services increase vulnerability. “In 2024 alone, the City of Windhoek Fire Brigade responded to over 2,000 fire-related incidents, including nearly 200 dwelling fires, with approximately 75% occurring in informal settlements,” Mayor Larandja said.

In a significant boost to emergency services, the Mayor handed over four newly acquired 4×4 fully equipped ambulances designed to serve residents in high-risk areas, reinforcing the city’s commitment to rapid response and community safety.

This year marks the second consecutive year Windhoek is participating in Fire Safety Week. Last year, the programme reached over 5,000 community members through awareness activities and engaged thousands more via schools, churches, and social media campaigns.

The week-long initiative is open to the public and features a range of activities including industry exhibitions, food stalls, a Fire Brigade Museum showcase, children’s entertainment, and firefighter games. Residents are encouraged to participate, learn, and adopt fire safety measures in their homes and neighbourhoods.

The City of Windhoek Fire Brigade continues to emphasise the importance of community engagement in preventing fire incidents and saving lives. Updates on activities and educational sessions throughout the week will be shared across official city channels.
