Windhoek Mayor Urges Safer Roads for Pedestrians and CCyclists. Windhoek Mayor, Cllr. Ndeshihafela Larandja, has urged motorists to adopt safer and more considerate behaviour towards pedestrians and cyclists, stressing the importance of coexistence on the city’s roads.
Speaking during the handover of 150 cycling safety gear sets at the Katutura Care Centre, the Mayor highlighted that creating safer roads is not only about reducing accidents but also about supporting broader efforts to lower carbon emissions.
“As stakeholders, we need to come together to raise awareness and encourage a behavioural shift among motorists towards pedestrians. This is essential in making our roads safer and supporting our broader efforts to reduce carbon emissions,” said Cllr. Larandja.
The beneficiaries of the safety gear were selected through constituency officers and the Physically Active Youth (PAY) Organisation.
Adding to the discussion, Ruben Uupindi of the Motor Vehicle Accident (MVA) Fund revealed that 32% of reported road fatalities involve pedestrians, underscoring the urgent need for road safety interventions. He also highlighted the protective role of cycling gear in reducing serious injuries and ensuring compliance with safety regulations.
The event also served as the official closing of Zero Emission Week 2025, held from 15–21 September under the theme of promoting sustainable mobility solutions. The campaign encouraged walking, cycling, and the use of public transport as practical alternatives to reduce carbon emissions.
Zero Emission Week was supported by a wide range of partners, including Namibia Breweries Limited, First National Bank, Ohlthaver & List, Puma Energy, Wingoc, Gondwana, Windhoek Country Club, Ebikes4Africa, PAY, and the Namibia Cycling Federation.
