Windhoek Mayor Commissions New Sanitation Hub in Babylon Settlement

Windhoek Mayor Commissions New Sanitation Hub in Babylon Settlement. Her Worship, the Mayor of Windhoek, Councillor Ndeshihafela Larandja, officially commissioned a newly built sanitation hub in the Babylon area of the Tobias Hainyeko Constituency today. The development marks a meaningful step in addressing urgent sanitation challenges faced by residents in informal settlements.

The hub, which consists of eight toilets and two urinals, was completed in July 2025 through a donation of N$490,000 from Maurel & Prom Namibia (PTY) LTD. The initiative reflects the growing importance of public-private partnerships in delivering essential services to underserved communities.

Mayor Larandja, speaking at the event, stressed that access to sanitation is a basic human right, and a cornerstone of dignified living. “This facility is more than infrastructure—it is a contribution to health, dignity, and community pride,” she said. She also noted that a similar project in the Mix settlement is nearing completion, indicating the City’s broader commitment to expanding basic services.

The Mayor expressed her appreciation to Maurel & Prom Namibia for their support, and urged more corporate stakeholders to partner in projects that support inclusive urban development. She also appealed to residents to use and maintain the facility responsibly.

Representing Maurel & Prom Namibia, Deputy General Manager Ms. Genievive Mangubat-Coppard commended all those involved and highlighted the company’s ongoing commitment to supporting community development through practical initiatives.

Long-time Babylon resident Ester Johannes welcomed the facility, stating, “We have suffered for many years without proper toilets. This new hub is a blessing. I encourage my fellow residents to take care of our new facility and use it responsibly.”

The sanitation hub is a part of the City of Windhoek’s strategic goal to improve living conditions and promote healthier, more sustainable communities.
