Bank of Namibia Confirms Current Currency Remains Legal Amid Upcoming Launch. The Bank of Namibia has reassured the public that all existing Namibian coins and banknotes remain legal tender and fully spendable, despite the anticipated launch of a new currency design. The announcement comes ahead of the official unveiling of the refreshed Namibia Dollar, scheduled for tomorrow.
In a public statement released via official platforms, the Bank addressed growing speculation and public concern over the upcoming currency rollout. The message was clear: “No Namibian currency is being discontinued.” Citizens are advised not to rush to banks, stash coins away, or stop using their current money in daily transactions.“All your coins and banknotes? Still good. Still legal. Still spendable,” the Bank emphasized.
The upcoming currency update is being described as a “glow-up”—a refreshed, modern design of the Namibia Dollar intended to reflect national identity while incorporating enhanced security features. However, this update does not mean older notes and coins are being phased out at this stage.
Social media campaigns under hashtags like #NoCoinLeftBehind, #MoneyGlowUp, and #ConfidenceMinted have been rolled out to spread awareness and reduce confusion. The Bank is urging the public and businesses to continue accepting all current denominations as usual.
The unveiling event tomorrow is expected to showcase the new currency design and provide further details about its features, rollout plan, and intended improvements.
