Windhoek Promotes Cycling as a Sustainable Transport Solution

Windhoek Promotes Cycling as a Sustainable Transport Solution. The City of Windhoek, in collaboration with Physically Active Youth (PAY), hosted a cycling event today to raise awareness about cycling as a mode of transport. The initiative was supported by the Namibia Cycling Federation (NCF) and A. Shipena Secondary School.

Cyclists covered two routes, a 35-kilometre and a 21-kilometre stretch, starting from the Katutura Multi-Purpose Centre. The journey took them through Bondel Street, Dietrich Genscher Street, Otjomuise Road, Mandume Ndemufayo Street, and Independence Avenue, before concluding at the City of Windhoek parking lot.

The event aimed to encourage more people to cycle, support Windhoek’s Non-Motorized Transport (NMT) developments, and advocate for sustainable transport solutions. By improving access and visibility of bicycles, the city hopes to reduce traffic congestion and contribute to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 11 (SDG 11), which promotes sustainable cities and communities.

Participants ranged from professional cyclists to first-time riders, all demonstrating enthusiasm and commitment to eco-friendly transportation. The scenic route not only offered a unique way to experience the city but also highlighted the benefits of cycling as a sustainable alternative.
