Windhoek Mayor Hosts Courtesy Visit from Chinese Ambassador. The Mayor of Windhoek, Councillor Sakarias Uunona, today received a courtesy visit from H.E. Zhao Weiping, Ambassador of the People’s Republic of China to Namibia, during a meeting held in the Namibian capital. The visit highlighted the longstanding diplomatic relationship between Namibia and China, with Windhoek continuing to serve as a key point of engagement for bilateral cooperation at municipal level.

During the meeting, Ambassador Zhao congratulated Mayor Uunona on his election as mayor and commended the city’s infrastructure development. He stated that the Chinese mission feels welcomed in Windhoek and described the city as a place where diplomatic relations are experienced positively.

He further referred to the historical ties between the two countries, noting that Windhoek has long acted as a gateway for Chinese cooperation in Namibia. Reference was made to the Sister City relationship between Windhoek and Shanghai, which has spanned three decades and remains an important symbol of cooperation.

Mayor Uunona welcomed the ambassador and expressed appreciation for China’s contribution to Namibia’s development over the years. He reiterated that the City of Windhoek, as the country’s economic centre, places value on partnerships that support development and service delivery for residents.

Both leaders acknowledged the importance of maintaining open channels of communication between local governments. They also expressed interest in strengthening exchanges and practical cooperation between Windhoek and Shanghai, particularly through increased mutual visits and continued municipal engagement.

The courtesy visit concluded with a shared commitment to sustaining the existing relationship between the two cities. The meeting underscored ongoing diplomatic engagement at city level and reflected continued efforts to promote cooperation within established international partnerships.

The engagement was received in a cordial atmosphere and formed part of routine diplomatic interactions between representatives of the City of Windhoek and the People’s Republic of China in Namibia’s capital today officially.
