Windhoek Marathon Unites Runners for Community Impact. Hundreds of runners gathered early this morning to take part in the third annual Vivo Energy Windhoek Marathon, an event that blends sport with social impact through a partnership between the City of Windhoek and Vivo Energy Namibia.
The 2024 edition featured four race categories: the full 42.2 km marathon kicked off at 06:00, followed by the 21 km half marathon at 06:30, the 10 km race at 07:00, and the 5 km fun run at 07:15. Each race drew participants from across the city, ranging from seasoned athletes to families and casual runners
All proceeds from the marathon are donated to the Windhoek Residents Mayoral Trust Fund, which supports initiatives that assist vulnerable communities. This year’s event raised N$296,358.55, which will go toward the construction of a Sanitation Hub at Mix Settlement, contributing to improved access to hygiene facilities for residents.
City of Windhoek Strategic Executive for Finance and Customer Services, Jeniffer Comalie, represented the municipal leadership at the event. Before joining the 5 km run herself, she extended encouragement to participants on behalf of the City’s CEO.
Over the years, the Vivo Energy Windhoek Marathon has grown beyond a fitness event into a vehicle for community investment. Previous funds have gone toward acquiring books for city-owned libraries in informal areas, reinforcing the marathon’s role in supporting long-term development goals.
By promoting health, unity, and purposeful giving, the Windhoek Marathon continues to demonstrate how corporate and civic partnerships can deliver positive change. For those planning community-focused events, this model shows how sports can be used to channel resources into areas of real need.
