Windhoek Electricity Department Halts Installations Due to Meter Shortage

Windhoek Electricity Department Halts Installations Due to Meter Shortage. The City of Windhoek has announced a temporary suspension of all single-phase prepayment electricity meter installations due to a shortage in supply. This includes both new electricity connections and meter conversions. The measure is effective immediately and is expected to last until 30 June 2025.

According to a public notice issued by the City’s Electricity Department, the shortage stems from unforeseen technical issues that are beyond the municipality’s control. The department emphasized that while installations are on hold, the limited remaining stock of single-phase prepayment meters will be allocated exclusively for urgent maintenance needs—specifically to replace faulty meters already in use.

This development means that residents and businesses requiring new meter installations will face delays for the duration of the shortage. However, city officials have assured the public that should new stock arrive sooner than anticipated, installation services will resume accordingly.

The department has expressed appreciation for the public’s patience and understanding during this period of disruption. Affected residents or developers seeking clarification or further information have been advised to contact Mr. Vezuva Isaac Mbapaha, Engineering Technician for Metering Operations.
