UNICEF Reaffirms Commitment to Health Sector During Courtesy Visit to Minister Luvindao. The Minister of Health and Social Services, Hon. Dr. Esperance Luvindao, welcomed a delegation from UNICEF on Monday, 12 May 2025, during a courtesy visit aimed at reaffirming and reviewing the long-standing cooperation between UNICEF and the Ministry of Health and Social Services (MoHSS).
During the meeting, UNICEF representatives outlined their continued support across key directorates within the Ministry, with a special focus on primary healthcare, community-based health services, and nutrition.
Under the Directorate of Primary Health Care, UNICEF has provided substantial assistance over the years in advancing maternal, newborn, and child health. This includes pivotal contributions to Namibia’s national efforts to eliminate mother-to-child transmission of HIV.
In the area of Community-Based Health Care, the visit acknowledged a significant milestone: the evolution of the Health Extension Workers initiative. Originally conceptualized following a feasibility assessment conducted in response to recurring disease outbreaks in Opuwo between 2007 and 2010, this program—now widely known as the Community Health Workers programme—continues to expand access to essential healthcare services at the grassroots level.
UNICEF has also played a vital role in strengthening Nutrition Services, with initiatives supporting maternal, child, and adolescent nutrition, and promoting practical, evidence-based interventions to reduce malnutrition and improve child survival outcomes.
