UNAM Ogongo Campus Champions Tree-Planting Drive in Ohangwena to Promote Climate Resilience. The University of Namibia’s (UNAM) Ogongo Campus recently led a tree-planting initiative in the Ohangwena Region, aiming to promote environmental sustainability and strengthen climate resilience. The event was carried out in collaboration with the Ministry of Environment, Forestry and Tourism, along with other local partners.
This project focused on planting a variety of trees in areas affected by deforestation and climate change. By increasing tree coverage, the initiative seeks to help communities better manage the environmental challenges caused by changing weather patterns, such as droughts and soil erosion.
According to organizers, the tree-planting activity forms part of ongoing efforts to encourage sustainable land management and raise awareness about the importance of preserving natural resources. Participants included staff and students from UNAM Ogongo Campus, local residents, and representatives from government ministries and community organizations.
Speaking during the event, representatives from the Ministry of Environment, Forestry and Tourism emphasized the value of trees in supporting ecosystems and providing long-term environmental benefits. They highlighted that tree planting not only improves the landscape but also helps with carbon storage and supports biodiversity.
UNAM Ogongo Campus officials stressed that this initiative reflects the university’s commitment to advancing practical solutions for climate-related challenges. Through these community-based activities, the campus aims to involve local populations in protecting their environment and securing sustainable livelihoods.
The event concluded with a shared commitment among all participants to continue working together on similar projects. The tree-planting drive is expected to serve as a model for other regions, demonstrating how local actions can contribute to broader environmental protection efforts across Namibia.
