UN Plaza Nears Completion Ahead of Historic Region 5 Youth Games in Windhoek

UN Plaza Nears Completion Ahead of Historic Region 5 Youth Games in Windhoek. Renovations at UN Plaza in Katutura are nearing completion as the City of Windhoek prepares to host the Region 5 Youth Games for the first time from 4 to 6 July 2025. The event will bring together approximately 2,552 athletes and officials from 10 Southern African countries, competing across 12 sports disciplines.

Originally inaugurated in 1995 by the late President Dr. Hage Geingob, UN Plaza is receiving a major facelift to meet international standards. The upgrade is aimed at transforming the space into a high-quality sports venue suitable for regional competition while uplifting community infrastructure in one of Windhoek’s most historic neighbourhoods.

On-site this morning, a City of Windhoek team led by Sidney Goagoseb (Section Head for Sports), Protacious Brinkman (Acting Quantity Surveyor: Maintenance), and Elago Nantana (Infrastructure Committee Member for Region 5) conducted a progress inspection. The team reported that the renovations are 90% complete and progressing well within the project timeline.

The Region 5 Youth Games are expected to draw significant attention to Namibia and Katutura, highlighting sport as a vehicle for regional cooperation and youth development. With sports codes such as basketball, volleyball, tennis, and others on the schedule, the upgraded venue is set to provide a world-class experience for both athletes and spectators.

The City of Windhoek views this infrastructure investment as part of a broader strategy to boost sports tourism, promote youth engagement, and leave a lasting legacy for the local community.
