Tree Planting Ceremony Marks Day of the African Child in Outapi

Tree Planting Ceremony Marks Day of the African Child in Outapi. A symbolic tree planting ceremony was held at Canisianum High School on 12 June to commemorate the Day of the African Child. The event brought together local leaders, educators, and international partners in a shared call for sustainable development and youth empowerment.

Hon. Dr. Emma Kantema, alongside Mr. Samuel Ocran, UNICEF Country Representative, led the initiative by planting a tree on the school grounds. The activity was supported by several distinguished dignitaries who joined in marking the day with a clear message: a greener, healthier, and more sustainable future for Namibia’s children.

The Day of the African Child is observed annually to honor the 1976 Soweto Uprising and to raise awareness of the challenges facing children across the continent. This year, the focus in Outapi highlighted environmental sustainability as a key priority in securing children’s rights and well-being.

UNICEF Namibia, in collaboration with the Ministry and local stakeholders, continues to promote child-centered development initiatives. The organization emphasized the importance of involving young people in environmental stewardship and community-driven action.

As the tree took root, it reminded all present of the long-term impact of today’s efforts. The event concluded with cultural performances by students, reinforcing the spirit of unity and hope that defined the occasion.
