Traditional Games Day Brings Community Spirit Alive Ahead of /Ae //Gams Festival. The City of Windhoek kicked off the countdown to the upcoming /Ae //Gams Arts & Cultural Festival with a joyful celebration of traditional games this past weekend at Paaltjies. Residents from across the city gathered for a day filled with nostalgia, fun, and cultural pride.

The Traditional Games Day served as a vibrant prelude to the much-anticipated festival set for April 25–26, offering a reminder of the importance of heritage and community through games such as Uma-dowa, Amagoes, Skululu, and Blikkies Volmaak. The event brought generations together, sparking laughter and connection through shared cultural experiences.

Team Soweto Finest made a strong return, successfully defending their title and taking home the floating trophy alongside other prizes. Their teamwork and enthusiasm set the tone for a day that celebrated friendly competition and unity.

Culinary talent was also on full display. The vetkoek and potjiekos competitions drew big crowds and even bigger appetites. Eva Garises secured first place in the vetkoek category, followed by Maria Nampila and Vetkoek Paleis. In the potjiekos showdown, Meno’s Kitchen took top honors, with Gisella Team and Palace Potjiekos rounding out the winners.

Prizes for all competition winners will be presented during the /Ae //Gams Festival later this month. The family-friendly atmosphere included food stalls, a lively jumping castle for children, and plenty of local flavor to enjoy. It was a true celebration of Namibian culture and unity.
