Portugal and Windhoek Explore Municipal-Level Ties During Diplomatic Visit

Portugal and Windhoek Explore Municipal-Level Ties During Diplomatic Visit. Her Worship Ndeshihafela Larandja, Mayor of the City of Windhoek, today hosted a courtesy visit from His Excellency Rui Carmo, Ambassador of Portugal to Namibia, at the City Council offices. The meeting marked another step in reinforcing the longstanding diplomatic relationship between Namibia and Portugal.

Ambassador Carmo expressed appreciation for the warm reception and reiterated Portugal’s commitment to strengthening bilateral ties. He highlighted ongoing cultural engagement initiatives, including the promotion of the Portuguese language in Namibian schools and recent contributions to the national library through book donations. The Ambassador also mentioned the May celebration of Lusophone countries, which aims to promote cultural exchange among Portuguese-speaking communities in Namibia.

Mayor Larandja welcomed the Ambassador’s remarks and acknowledged the existing goodwill between the two nations. While there is no current formal agreement between Windhoek and any Portuguese municipality, the Mayor noted that the broader Namibia–Portugal relationship presents opportunities for municipal cooperation.

Ambassador Carmo shared his optimism about possible partnerships between Windhoek and Lisbon, particularly in areas such as renewable energy, urban development, and cultural preservation. He extended an invitation to Mayor Larandja to attend the Day of Portugal, Camões and the Portuguese Communities celebration on 10 June 2025 at the National Art Gallery of Namibia.

The meeting concluded with a mutual interest in exploring future collaboration at the city level. Both parties expressed a shared commitment to fostering international cooperation that supports local development.
