NUST Clarifies eLearning Disruption, Confirms No Data Leaked

NUST Clarifies eLearning Disruption, Confirms No Data Leaked. The Namibia University of Science and Technology (NUST) has issued a formal statement addressing recent media coverage regarding a disruption to its eLearning platform. The incident, initially reported by the Windhoek Observer on May 7, involved a temporary system issue that occurred between April 16 and April 19, 2025.

According to the university, the disruption was the result of a minor glitch, which was promptly communicated to staff and students through NUST’s official WhatsApp channel on April 19 and again on April 20. The institution confirmed that its technical team swiftly restored the system by April 20, ensuring minimal impact.

In a follow-up communication issued internally on April 24, NUST provided detailed information on the disruption and informed affected students about the loss of certain assessments that could not be recovered. Despite this, the university reassured stakeholders that a comprehensive technical assessment had confirmed no data was leaked during the event.

NUST emphasized its ongoing commitment to cybersecurity, recognizing the rising threat of cyberattacks both globally and within Namibia. The university highlighted that the issue affected only a small segment of its community and stressed its dedication to continually strengthening its digital safeguards.

Acknowledging the public’s interest in the matter, NUST also took the opportunity to underscore its academic contributions in the field of cybersecurity. The institution is set to graduate over 200 students in cybersecurity and ethical hacking at its upcoming May graduation ceremonies in Windhoek and Eenhana.

The statement was released by the Department of Corporate Engagement and Internationalisation and reaffirmed the university’s transparency and readiness in addressing digital infrastructure challenges.
