NamPower Foundation Funds Namibian Young Scientists for Regional Expo

NamPower Foundation Funds Namibian Young Scientists for Regional EExpo. The NamPower Foundation has sponsored N$50,000 to support two Namibian learners who won the 2025 National Science Fair and earned the opportunity to participate in the Eskom Young Scientist Expo.

The sponsorship will enable Guillermo Melando from Oranjemund Private School and Thobias Gabriel from Donatus Secondary School in Otjiwarongo to compete alongside learners from across the continent.

The two learners secured the opportunity following their performance at the 2025 National Science Fair. The Eskom Young Scientist Expo provides the platform for them to participate in a broader science-focused competition.

NamPower Foundation Head Otilie Mujoro said the organisation viewed the initiative as an investment in young people and their potential to contribute to Namibia’s future.

“We do not simply celebrate competitions and awards, we celebrate possibility. We celebrate young minds who dared to ask questions, to explore ideas, to solve problems, and to imagine a better future for Namibia,” Mujoro said.

She said investment in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) programmes represented an investment in hope, dignity, innovation and national progress.

The N$50,000 sponsorship forms part of NamPower’s broader support for science and mathematics initiatives. The company dedicated more than N$700,000 towards science and mathematics programmes for the year.

The initiative is hosted and led by the National Commission on Research Science and Technology (NCRST), in partnership with the Ministry of Education, Innovations, Youth, Sports, Arts and Culture and UNICEF Namibia.

The sponsorship provides support for Melando and Gabriel to take their participation beyond the national science fair and compete at the Eskom Young Scientist Expo.

Their participation also places the two learners among students from other parts of the continent taking part in the event.

NamPower Foundation said its support for the learners reflects its broader contribution towards science and mathematics programmes during the year, with the foundation allocating funding to initiatives focused on these areas.
