NamPower Commissions Anixas II Power Station to Strengthen National Power Supply

NamPower Commissions Anixas II Power Station to Strengthen National Power Supply. NamPower has officially inaugurated the Anixas II Power Station, a new facility aimed at enhancing Namibia’s electricity generation capacity. The power station was formally opened on 5 March 2025 by President Dr. Nangolo Mbumba during a ceremony held in Walvis Bay.

Anixas II adds 54 megawatts (MW) to Namibia’s power grid and is designed as an expansion of the existing Anixas I Power Station, which has a capacity of 22.5 MW. According to NamPower, Anixas II was built at a cost of approximately N$1.28 billion, fully financed through the company’s own resources without external funding.

NamPower stated that the new facility aims to provide reliable and dispatchable electricity to the national grid, supporting the country’s energy needs and improving security of supply. The station is also expected to assist in managing the variability of renewable energy sources by providing backup generation when needed.

Speaking at the event, NamPower Managing Director Mr. Kahenge Haulofu highlighted the company’s focus on ensuring a stable electricity supply through strategic projects that contribute to a balanced energy mix. He noted that increasing local generation is a priority to reduce reliance on external power sources.

President Dr. Nangolo Mbumba expressed appreciation to the Ministry of Mines and Energy, NamPower, and other contributors involved in completing the project. He described Anixas II as an important development for Namibia’s energy infrastructure, supporting the country’s long-term growth plans.

President Mbumba also encouraged stakeholders to continue working towards achieving energy security and affordability, as outlined in Namibia’s Vision 2030 goals. NamPower has reaffirmed its commitment to delivering dependable and cost-effective electricity to support the country’s development and meet the needs of its citizens.
