NamPower Breaks Ground on Namibia’s Largest Solar PV Power Station

NamPower Breaks Ground on Namibia’s Largest Solar PV Power Station. On 19 June 2025, NamPower officially commenced construction of the 100 MW Sores |Gaib Solar PV Power Station, marking its largest solar power project to date. The groundbreaking ceremony took place near Rosh Pinah, approximately 33 kilometers northwest of the town.

The name Sores |Gaib means “Power of the Sun” in Khoekhoegowab. Upon completion, the power station is expected to make a notable contribution to Namibia’s energy mix by increasing the share of renewable energy, reducing dependency on imported electricity, and lowering fossil fuel consumption.

NamPower’s total investment in the project amounts to N$1.6 billion. Funding is sourced primarily through a loan of about N$1.3 billion from KfW, the German development bank, with the remainder covered by NamPower’s own reserves. The loan arrangement reflects ongoing cooperation between the Namibian and German governments.

During construction, the project is projected to create over 300 direct jobs, with a focus on employing local labor and promoting skills development. The Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC) contractor has committed to allocating 25% of the contract value—approximately N$356 million—to local content, emphasizing NamPower’s prioritization of local participation.

Environmental considerations are integrated into the project through an Environmental and Social Management Plan aimed at protecting biodiversity and supporting responsible labor and community engagement practices.

NamPower Managing Director Kahenge Haulofu highlighted the significance of the Sores |Gaib Power Station for Namibia’s sustainable development. He noted the country’s abundant solar resources and the role of this project in advancing renewable energy capacity.
