Namibian Schools to Close for Memorial Service Honoring Late Founding President Sam Nujoma. The Ministry of Education, Arts and Culture has announced the closure of all public and private schools on Friday, 28 February 2025, to allow learners and their families to attend the memorial service for the late Founding President, Dr. Sam Shafiishuna Nujoma.
In an official communication addressed to Chief Regional Officers, Directors of Education, Inspectors, and School Principals, the ministry emphasized the significance of this national event, which will take place in Windhoek. The decision aligns with the period of National Mourning declared following Dr. Nujoma’s passing on 8 February 2025.
The closure enables students to participate in honoring Namibia’s first president, who played a pivotal role in the country’s liberation struggle and nation-building efforts. The memorial service is expected to draw national and international dignitaries, with citizens gathering to pay their final respects.
Education officials have urged schools to ensure smooth communication with parents and guardians regarding the closure. The ministry has also copied the directive to the Namibia National Students Organisation (NANSO) and the Namibia National Teachers Union (NANTU) to ensure broader coordination.
