Namibian Man Drowns in Orange River During Illegal Fishing Expedition. Authorities in Namibia are searching for the body of Mabilani Osbert Mabilani, a 35-year-old man who drowned in the Orange River while allegedly engaging in illegal fishing. The incident occurred on the morning of Friday, 7 February 2025, near Farm Boplaatz.

According to police reports, Mabilani was fishing with another individual when the inflatable tube he was using to stay afloat suddenly burst. Unable to keep himself above water, he was swept away by the river’s current. His fishing companion, who survived the ordeal, reported that they had set up camp on the South African side of the river to evade Namibian law enforcement officers patrolling the area.

Authorities believe that the duo may have been fishing illegally, as the Orange River is a monitored fishing zone. A deflated tube was later recovered from the river, but there has been no sign of Mabilani’s body.

The police have since informed the deceased’s family, and efforts to locate his remains are ongoing. Search and rescue teams are working along the river, though strong currents and underwater obstacles have made the operation challenging.

Illegal fishing remains a concern in border areas, with individuals often taking risks to avoid detection. Authorities have warned against such activities, emphasizing the dangers of using unsafe flotation devices and engaging in unregulated fishing practices.

As investigations continue, police have urged the public to come forward with any information that could assist in locating Mabilani’s body. The incident serves as a tragic reminder of the risks associated with unlawful fishing and the importance of adhering to safety regulations when operating near water bodies.
