Namibian Government Moves to Restore Home Matches for National Teams

Namibian Government Moves to Restore Home Matches for National Teams. In a decisive move to enhance Namibia’s sports infrastructure, newly appointed Minister of Education, Innovation, Youth, Sports, Arts, and Culture, Honourable Sanet Steenkamp, alongside Deputy Minister Honourable Dino Ballotti, met with the leadership of the Namibia Rugby Union (NRU) and the Namibia Football Association (NFA) on March 28, 2025.

The discussions centered on the urgent need to upgrade facilities to ensure Namibia’s national football team, the Brave Warriors, can host matches on home soil. The Ministry’s leadership outlined a 12-month mandate to achieve this goal, acknowledging that while plans to revamp the Independence Stadium remain a priority, the project’s extensive three- to four-year timeline necessitates interim solutions.

To bridge the gap, the Ministry, in collaboration with the NFA and NRU, is focusing on upgrading the Hage Geingob Stadium and the Sam Nujoma Stadium to meet international standards. Efforts are underway to fast-track renovations in partnership with the City of Windhoek to ensure that at least one of the stadiums is ready for use as soon as possible.

The initiative aims not only to restore home-ground advantage for the Brave Warriors but also to strengthen Namibia’s overall sports infrastructure, fostering national pride and reducing costs associated with playing matches abroad.
