Namibia to Host African Seismological Commission General Assembly in February 2025

Namibia to Host African Seismological Commission General Assembly in February 2025. The Ministry of Mines and Energy (MME) of Namibia is set to host the 4th General Assembly of the African Seismological Commission (AfSC) from February 24 to 28, 2025, in Windhoek. This significant event will convene seismologists and geoscientists from across the continent to discuss advancements in earthquake research, seismic technology, and collaborative efforts in seismic monitoring.

Established in 2014 under the International Association of Seismology and Physics of the Earth’s Interior (IASPEI), the AfSC aims to promote seismological research and cooperation among African nations. The upcoming assembly, organized by the Geological Survey of Namibia (GSN), underscores Namibia’s commitment to advancing geoscientific studies and seismic hazard assessment.

The General Assembly will feature discussions on the latest developments in earthquake monitoring, seismic data analysis, and the implementation of cutting-edge technologies in seismology. Participants will also explore strategies to enhance regional collaboration and capacity-building initiatives, aiming to strengthen Africa’s resilience to seismic hazards.

Hosting this assembly offers Namibia an opportunity to showcase its advancements in geoscientific research and its contributions to international seismic monitoring efforts. The event is expected to foster knowledge exchange, promote scientific partnerships, and inspire initiatives that address seismic challenges unique to the African continent.
