Namibia Suspends International Travel for Government Officials Amid Leadership Transition. President Nangolo Mbumba has issued a temporary ban on international travel for senior government officials as Namibia undergoes a political transition. This measure, which took effect on January 28, will remain in place until President-elect Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah’s administration takes office on March 21.
The travel restriction applies to ministers, deputy ministers, and executive directors (EDs), requiring them to stay in the country to focus on executive and parliamentary responsibilities. Cabinet Secretary George Simataa conveyed the directive, emphasizing that leaders must prioritize ministerial programs and assist with the transition.
“All foreign travel by ministers and deputy ministers is suspended with immediate effect,” the directive states, further instructing EDs to remain available to support their respective ministries. Only local travel requests will be considered during this period.
The suspension aims to ensure continuity and effective governance as Namibia prepares for a change in leadership. President Mbumba’s directive underscores the importance of finalizing government programs and addressing critical policy matters before the new administration takes office.
By keeping senior officials focused on domestic governance, the government seeks to maintain stability and ensure a seamless transition of power.
