On the solemn morning of February 9, 2025, Namibia and the world mourn the loss of His Excellency Dr. Sam Shafiishuna Nujoma, the Founding President and revered Father of the Namibian Nation. Dr. Nujoma passed away on February 8 at 11:45 PM in Windhoek, Namibia, at the age of 95.

Born on May 12, 1929, in Ongandjera, Ovamboland, Dr. Nujoma emerged as a pivotal figure in Namibia’s fight against colonial rule. In 1959, he co-founded the Ovamboland People’s Organization (OPO), which later evolved into the South West Africa People’s Organization (SWAPO) in 1960. As SWAPO’s first president, he led the organization through a protracted liberation struggle against apartheid South Africa, culminating in Namibia’s independence on March 21, 1990.

Following independence, Dr. Nujoma became Namibia’s first democratically elected president, serving three terms from 1990 to 2005. His leadership was instrumental in uniting a nation emerging from the shadows of colonialism and apartheid. He championed national reconciliation, economic development, and the establishment of democratic institutions, laying a solid foundation for the country’s future.

Dr. Nujoma’s contributions extended beyond Namibia’s borders. He was a prominent figure in the broader African liberation movement, collaborating with leaders like Julius Nyerere, Kwame Nkrumah, and Patrice Lumumba. His Pan-African vision and commitment to the continent’s freedom and unity earned him international recognition and respect.

In his personal life, Dr. Nujoma married Kovambo Theopoldine Katjimune on May 6, 1956. The couple had three sons and one daughter. His eldest son, Utoni Nujoma, is a notable politician and member of SWAPO, serving in various governmental roles.

As Namibia enters a period of national mourning, the government will announce details regarding the mourning period and funeral arrangements in consultation with the Nujoma and Kondombolo families. The nation reflects on Dr. Nujoma’s unparalleled contributions to its liberation, development, and unity.

On behalf of the people and the Government of the Republic of Namibia, sincere condolences are extended to the Founding First Lady, Her Excellency Kovambo Nujoma, Honorable Utoni Nujoma, the children, and the entire Nujoma and Kondombolo families.
