Namibia Contributes N$90 Million to SADC Mission in the DRC. Namibia has fulfilled its financial commitment to the Southern African Development Community (SADC) Mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo (SAMIDRC), contributing approximately N$90 million to support regional efforts in stabilizing the conflict-ridden eastern DRC.

The contribution follows a decision made during the extraordinary SADC summit held in Luanda in November 2023, where member states agreed to provide financial and military assistance to address the ongoing security crisis in the DRC. While Namibia has not deployed troops, its financial support underscores the country’s commitment to regional peace and security.

Minister of International Relations and Cooperation Peya Mushelenga confirmed the contribution, emphasizing Namibia’s belief that diplomatic efforts remain essential in resolving the long-standing conflict. “While we are meeting our financial obligations, we strongly believe that a lasting solution to the conflict in the DRC must be based on dialogue and diplomatic engagement,” he stated.

The situation in the eastern DRC remains volatile, with armed groups clashing over territory and resources, causing mass displacement of civilians. SADC’s intervention aims to provide military support to Congolese forces while also encouraging dialogue to bring about a sustainable resolution.

Namibia’s financial commitment aligns with its long-standing support for peacekeeping efforts in the region. The country has previously contributed to various SADC-led initiatives aimed at promoting stability in Southern Africa. The latest funding reinforces its role as a key regional player in efforts to end conflict through both financial backing and diplomatic advocacy.

Political analysts note that Namibia’s approach highlights a growing trend within SADC, where some member states choose financial support over direct military involvement. This allows nations to contribute to regional stability without overextending their military capabilities.
