Namibia Bids Farewell to Founding President Sam Nujoma. The late Founding President Sam Nujoma’s remains were flown from Hosea Kutako International Airport to the Omusati Region on Thursday for a state memorial service at his birthplace, Etunda.
President Nangolo Mbumba accompanied Nujoma’s family to the airport, joined by former President Hifikepunye Pohamba and Prime Minister Saara Kuugongelwa-Amadhila.
Nujoma, who passed away on February 8, 2025, at the age of 95, was remembered for his pivotal role in Namibia’s independence. Presidential Spokesperson Alfredo Hengari urged Namibians to attend regional memorial services to honor his legacy.
Describing Nujoma as Namibia’s greatest political leader, Hengari highlighted his dedication and service to the nation.A second regional memorial service is scheduled for Friday in Eenhana, Ohangwena Region.
After these regional ceremonies, Nujoma’s remains will return to Windhoek, where they will lie in state at Parliament Gardens from February 27. The Independence Stadium will host a final tribute on February 28, leading up to his official burial on March 1, 2025.
