Namibia and Benin Forge Path to Strengthen Women-Led Trade Under AfCFTA

Namibia and Benin Forge Path to Strengthen Women-Led Trade Under AfCFTA. Namibia and Benin have reaffirmed their commitment to deepening collaboration on women’s economic empowerment through targeted partnerships under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) Protocol on Women and Youth in Trade.

This development follows a bilateral meeting between Namibia’s Minister of International Relations and Trade, Hon. Selma Ashipala-Musavyi, and Benin’s Minister of Social Affairs and Micro-Financing, Hon. Veronique M. Tognifode, held on 27 May 2025 in Cotonou.

During the meeting, the two ministers emphasized the importance of facilitating trade initiatives specifically tailored to empower women entrepreneurs. They highlighted the potential of cross-border collaboration in enhancing women-led business ventures and fostering inclusive growth.

The discussion underscored the need to strengthen institutional support for women-owned enterprises and to promote greater participation of women in formal trade networks across the continent. Both ministers acknowledged that women remain underrepresented in key economic sectors and affirmed their intent to support policies that break down barriers to market access.

The meeting also marked a moment of transition, as Hon. Ashipala-Musavyi was concluding her diplomatic service as Namibia’s Ambassador to Benin. Hon. Tognifode extended her well wishes to the Minister in her new role and expressed confidence that future engagements under their respective portfolios would further contribute to advancing mutual goals

The exchange signaled a strong intent from both nations to utilize the AfCFTA platform to not only boost intra-African trade but also ensure that women entrepreneurs are fully included in economic opportunities. Further dialogue and collaboration are anticipated as the two countries align efforts to promote gender-responsive trade strategies and sustainable development.
