Ministry of ICT Reviews Broadband Policy to Accelerate Digital Transformation. The Ministry of Information, Communication, and Technology (ICT) is conducting a review of the Broadband Policy 2019 in collaboration with key stakeholders. The initiative aims to fast-track digital progress, address existing challenges, and align with regional and national strategies
The review process will incorporate new broadband targets recently endorsed by SADC Ministers responsible for ICT, ensuring Botswana remains competitive in the evolving digital landscape. Additionally, the ministry plans to develop a comprehensive Implementation Action Plan (2025-2029) to guide future broadband expansion and infrastructure development.
According to the ministry, the revised policy will also align with major national and regional frameworks, including the National Development Plan 6 (NDP 6), Harambee Prosperity Plan 2 (HPP2), National Digital Strategy (NDS), National 5G Strategy, and the Digital Trade Protocol. These alignments are expected to enhance connectivity, drive economic growth, and position Botswana as a regional leader in digital transformation.
The Broadband Policy 2019 was initially introduced to improve internet access, affordability, and speed across the country. However, with the rapid advancement of technology and the increasing demand for high-speed internet, adjustments are necessary to meet new industry standards and global best practices.
Stakeholder consultations will be key in shaping the updated policy, ensuring that it effectively addresses both infrastructure and regulatory needs. The ministry remains committed to fostering a digital economy by enhancing broadband access for businesses, educational institutions, and individuals.
