Commonwealth Urged to Safeguard Multilateralism Amid Global Shifts

Commonwealth Urged to Safeguard Multilateralism Amid Global Shifts. Commonwealth Member States have been called upon to remain vigilant and united in the face of growing global challenges that threaten the principles of multilateralism and shared economic cooperation.

Delivering a statement on behalf of Namibia’s President, Her Excellency Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah, Vice President H.E. Lucia Witbooi stressed the need for the Commonwealth to stay alert to emerging risks such as trade wars, climate change, shifting alliances, and disruptive economic trends. Her remarks were made during a dinner hosted by Namibia’s Ministry of International Relations and Trade (MIRT) on the sidelines of the Commonwealth Trade Ministers Meeting and the inaugural Commonwealth Business Summit, taking place from 16 to 20 June 2025.

The gathering brought together senior government officials, trade ministers, and business leaders from across the Commonwealth, all of whom echoed the urgent need to deepen cooperation in trade and investment to achieve shared prosperity.

Speakers emphasised resilience, innovation, and inclusiveness as critical pillars for strengthening economic ties and safeguarding the multilateral frameworks that support global trade. Discussions also centred on enhancing intra-Commonwealth trade and reducing the impact of global economic uncertainty on developing member states.

For Botswana’s entrepreneurs and policymakers, the summit highlights the importance of regional and international partnerships, as well as the value of multilateral platforms in creating fair trade conditions and long-term economic stability.
