City of Windhoek Responds to Electricity Disconnection Concerns. The City of Windhoek has addressed concerns regarding the recent disconnection of electricity for Mr. Petrus Eiseb, following public discussions sparked by a social media post from the Namibian Broadcasting Corporation (NBC).
According to an official statement from the Office of the Chief Executive Officer, the disconnection was due to outstanding arrears of N$4,300.00, in line with the City’s Credit Control Policy. The policy states that any municipal account overdue for more than 30 days is subject to disconnection to prevent further debt accumulation. Mr. Eiseb’s account had been in arrears for over 60 days at the time of the disconnection.
The City further clarified that Mr. Eiseb had previously benefited from the 2024 Debt Write-Off program, clearing N$10,000 in outstanding debt. His electricity supply has since been restored after he visited the City’s offices and made a payment arrangement.
Given that the City manages over 80,000 municipal accounts, it stated that it cannot independently track customers’ medical conditions unless formally informed. The City was not aware of Mr. Eiseb’s medical condition until it was brought to its attention through media reports. Residents with critical medical needs are encouraged to engage with the City’s Credit Control Division to explore available options under the Indigent Policy.
The statement reaffirmed the City’s commitment to service delivery, urging residents to proactively communicate their circumstances to enable appropriate support. The City also called on journalists to ensure balanced and factual reporting to prevent unnecessary public distress.
