City of Windhoek Raises Alarm Over Surge in Streetlight Cable Theft

City of Windhoek Raises Alarm Over Surge in Streetlight Cable Theft. The City of Windhoek has issued a public alert following a spike in streetlight cable theft, with the most recent incident occurring on Matshitshi Street near the Otjomuise Police Station. In this case, perpetrators went to extreme lengths—trenching to access underground cables and stripping pillar boxes and transformers.

Authorities report that similar incidents are occurring on an almost weekly basis throughout the capital, severely compromising the integrity of public infrastructure. The theft of these critical components leaves entire streets in darkness, creating unsafe conditions and heightening the risk of crime.

“This is not just an attack on city infrastructure—it’s an attack on the safety and well-being of our residents,” the City of Windhoek stated. The municipality warns that these acts of vandalism delay service delivery, increase operational costs, and endanger lives.

The City is appealing to all residents to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities, particularly individuals digging near streetlights or attempting to sell electrical cables. Reports can be made to the Windhoek City Police Service by calling 061 302 302 or sending an SMS to 4444. All information is treated confidentially, and anonymity is assured.
