City of Windhoek Educates Residents on Domestic Meter Options to Help Cut Electricity Costs. The City of Windhoek’s Department of Electricity has launched an informative campaign to help residents better understand the different types of domestic electricity meters, aiming to assist households in making informed choices that could reduce electricity costs.
The campaign highlights the differences between prepaid and post-paid meters, particularly in terms of cost-effectiveness based on electricity consumption levels. According to the Department, households that consume 1056 kWh or less per month could benefit from switching to prepaid meters, as they are generally cheaper at that usage level.
Using a cost comparison chart, the City demonstrates how prepaid meters save up to N$42 for 1000 kWh consumption. However, once monthly usage exceeds 1056 kWh, post-paid meters become more cost-effective, saving up to N$108 for households consuming 1200 kWh.
To assist residents in choosing the most suitable option, the City outlines a four-step decision-making guide:
- Know your monthly usage in kilowatt-hours (kWh).
- Compare costs between prepaid and post-paid systems.
- Choose the meter type based on your consumption.
- Consider control and convenience features.
Prepaid meters offer real-time monitoring, help avoid end-of-month bill surprises, and give users greater control over their spending. Meanwhile, post-paid meters may suit higher-use households who prefer monthly billing and stability.
The City’s message emphasizes flexibility, noting that residents can switch to pre-payment at any time. By making the right meter choice, households can better manage electricity use and expenses.
