Avis Dam Sluice Gates Open as Water Levels Reach Capacity. In a historic moment for Windhoek, the Avis Dam sluice gates were opened today for the first time in over a decade, following significant rainfall that brought the dam to near-full capacity.
The City of Windhoek confirmed that one of the two sluice gates was opened to regulate water levels and prevent overflow, ensuring controlled water flow into surrounding areas. This marks the first time since 2011 that the sluice gates have been used, highlighting the dramatic shift from persistent drought conditions to an abundance of water.
City officials had earlier issued warnings to residents, motorists, and pedestrians in low-lying areas, as rising water levels could impact nearby rivers and drainage systems. Emergency response teams, including City Police and disaster management units, were on-site to monitor the situation and ensure public safety.
According to reports, the dam level stood at 2.8 meters at the gates on the previous day, just 300mm shy of full capacity. Given the risk of potential flooding, authorities decided to open the sluice gates gradually to prevent sudden surges that could damage infrastructure or nearby properties.
Residents gathered near the dam and surrounding areas to witness the rare event, celebrating the end of prolonged water shortages in the region. The increased water levels are expected to boost local water reserves and ease supply concerns for the city.
