AEDU’s 14th Annual Technical Conference Focuses on Namibia’s Sustainable Energy Future. The 14th Annual Technical Conference of the Association of Electricity Distribution Utilities in Namibia (AEDU) kicked off at The Dome, Swakopmund, highlighting the crucial role of reliable and affordable electricity in Namibia’s economic growth and development. The event began with an address by Deputy Mayor Cllr. Suamma Kautondokwa, who emphasized how electricity infrastructure contributes to investment attraction and supports community development in Swakopmund.
However, the conference also shed light on significant challenges facing the sector, including rising electricity tariffs, limited access to electricity, and the slow adoption of new technologies. These issues underscore the need for urgent action to secure a sustainable energy future for Namibia.
Renewable Energy Solutions were identified as key to addressing the challenges. Solar, wind, and ocean wave technologies were highlighted as promising solutions for reducing reliance on traditional power sources and ensuring a greener energy future. The focus also included supporting local businesses through procurement initiatives, fostering local energy generation, and ensuring the long-term sustainability of the sector.
Safety remains a priority, with illegal electricity connections posing significant risks to communities. Industry leaders called for stronger awareness campaigns to safeguard lives and reduce hazardous practices.
Nndwamato Mutshidza, President of AEDU, stressed the need for collaboration and innovation to meet Namibia’s growing electricity demand, which is projected to peak at 1,243 MW by 2040.
The conference concluded with a call for expanded grid infrastructure, the embracing of renewable energy, and ensuring affordable electricity for all Namibians. The future of Namibia’s energy sector is one of collaboration, sustainability, and innovation.
