Namibia Marks Historic Moment with Opening of ICC Men’s Under-19 Cricket World Cup. Namibia has officially opened the ICC Men’s Under-19 Cricket World Cup, marking the first time the country has hosted a Cricket World Cup tournament. The opening ceremony was led by the Minister of Education, Innovation, Youth, Sports, Arts and Culture, Honourable Dr Sanet L. Addressing attendees, Dr Steenkamp described the occasion as a historic milestone for Namibia and conveyed the country’s excitement and honour in hosting a tournament of international significance. She highlighted the importance of the event beyond the boundaries of sport, noting its broader social and cultural meaning.

“This tournament is not only about runs, wickets and results; it is a celebration of youth potential, sporting excellence, unity and international cooperation,” the Minister said.

Dr Steenkamp formally welcomed the eight participating nations competing in the tournament. These include defending champions Australia, along with Sri Lanka, Ireland, Afghanistan, the West Indies, Tanzania, South Africa and Japan. She encouraged the visiting teams to feel at home during their stay in Namibia and to experience the country’s hospitality and welcoming spirit.

“May you feel at home in our country, may you experience our warmth and hospitality, and may the spirit of competition, friendship and respect define your time with us,” she said.

The Minister also spoke about the tournament environment, stating that Namibia offers conditions suited for competitive cricket and an atmosphere intended to engage both players and spectators throughout the event. She referenced the country’s landscapes and match settings as part of the overall experience for teams and fans alike.

Dr Steenkamp expressed hope that the tournament would create lasting memories for all involved and leave a positive impression that endures beyond the conclusion of the competition. She noted that Namibia looks forward to hosting the matches and welcoming the international cricket community for the duration of the World Cup.

The ICC Men’s Under-19 Cricket World Cup brings together emerging cricket talent from around the world, with matches scheduled to take place across Namibia during the tournament period.
