Minister Steenkamp Commends Greenwell Matongo Primary for Resilience Amid Challenges. Hon. Sanet L. Steenkamp, Minister of Education, Innovation, Youth, Sports, Arts and Culture, paid a surprise visit to Greenwell Matongo Primary School in the Zambezi Region, where she engaged directly with the school’s management team to discuss both achievements and pressing challenges.
Greenwell Matongo Primary currently caters to 1,255 learners, supported by 46 teachers and three Heads of Department (HODs). The school continues to face difficulties such as overcrowded classrooms, infrastructure shortages, and the need for additional HODs. Despite these hurdles, the school has shown resilience and determination in creating a supportive learning environment.
One of the key measures implemented to address congestion has been the redirection of some learners to Choto Primary School. This adjustment has eased classroom pressures and improved the conditions for teaching and learning.
During her visit, Hon. Steenkamp commended the school for its unity and resilience, particularly noting its remarkable record of maintaining a zero dropout rate. She attributed this achievement to the dedication of teachers, the involvement of parents, and the commitment of learners.
The Minister used the occasion to stress the importance of tackling learning poverty, highlighting the need for well-trained primary school teachers who can make a lasting impact. She further emphasized the strengthening of pre-primary education, describing it as the cornerstone of lifelong learning.
Hon. Steenkamp assured the school community that the Ministry has taken note of their concerns and reaffirmed its commitment to creating inclusive and supportive learning environments nationwide. Her visit underscored the importance of collaboration between government, educators, parents, and learners in building a stronger education system for Namibia.
