Ashley Martins Wins Namibia’s First Track and Field Medal at African Schools Games. Namibia secured its first track and field medal at the ongoing ANOCA African Schools Games in Algeria, as javelin thrower Ashley Martins delivered a silver-medal performance on Sunday morning.
Representing Walvis Bay Private School, Martins recorded a throw of 41.99 metres, earning Namibia its 21st overall medal at the Games. Her effort placed her second behind Egypt’s Asseel Motawae, who claimed gold with a commanding distance of 55.36 metres.
The silver medal marks a proud moment not only for Martins and her school, but also for Team Namibia, as it adds a new discipline to the country’s medal haul in Algeria. Prior to Sunday’s event, Namibia had secured medals primarily in equestrian endurance riding, with Elani and Elbe Potgieter earning medals 19 and 20 on Saturday.
The achievement highlights the depth and promise of Namibia’s young athletes across various sporting codes. As the track and field portion of the competition wraps up on Monday, the Namibian team will begin its return home on Tuesday.
The African Schools Games serve as a platform for under-18 athletes from across the continent to compete at an elite level, gain international experience, and represent their nations with pride.
With Martins’ silver medal and the growing success of Team Namibia, the country continues to build a solid foundation for the future of youth sport.
