Lucia Witbooi Appointed as Namibia’s First Female Vice President. In a historic development, President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah has appointed Lucia Witbooi as Namibia’s Vice President, marking the first time in the nation’s 35-year history that both the presidency and vice presidency are held by women.
Witbooi’s journey to this esteemed position began in the rural south of Namibia, where she worked as a teacher near Karasburg and later in Gibeon. Her transition from education to politics saw her elected to the National Assembly in 2009 at the age of 49, securing the 34th spot on the Swapo Party’s list.
The announcement of her appointment was met with heartfelt celebrations from the Witbooi clan, who honored the legacy of national hero Kaptein Hendrik !Nanseb Witbooi through traditional praise songs. These songs highlighted the resilience and determination associated with their esteemed ancestor.
President Nandi-Ndaitwah has entrusted Vice President Witbooi with the responsibility of overseeing functions related to marginalized and disabled communities. This move aims to ensure that these segments of society receive the attention and care they deserve.
