Namibian Arts Council Grants Over N$1.5 Million in Student Bursaries. The National Arts Council of Namibia (NACN) has awarded bursaries totaling N$1,526,032.70 (around $80,000) to 36 successful applicants, reaffirming its commitment to supporting education and professional development in the arts and culture sectors.
A total of 116 individuals applied for financial assistance through the NACN Bursary Fund, with only 36 receiving funding to further their studies in creative fields. The initiative reflects the council’s ongoing efforts to nurture talent and strengthen Namibia’s cultural landscape.
In a statement, the NACN emphasized the importance of investing in the country’s artistic community. “This funding initiative is part of our broader mission to provide learning opportunities and develop a skilled creative workforce, contributing to the nation’s long-term cultural and economic growth,” the council said.
The bursary recipients have demonstrated exceptional talent and dedication in their respective fields. This financial support will enable them to access better educational resources and refine their skills, ensuring they make meaningful contributions to Namibia’s creative industries.
The funding covers a wide range of disciplines essential to the sector’s growth, including digital art, game design, architecture, jewellery making, arts journalism, cultural policy, curatorship, graphic design, and organology.
Beyond providing financial aid, the NACN is also focused on expanding career opportunities in the arts by fostering a network of skilled professionals. “Building a community of trained artists and cultural practitioners is vital to the sustainability of our creative sector,” the council added.
The bursary programme is part of the National Arts Fund, which was established under the National Arts Fund Act No. 1 of 2005. Administered by the NACN, the fund plays a crucial role in promoting artistic growth in Namibia, particularly in underserved communities.
